Any supplement could only help the nails as part of a good diet supplying enough quality protein and other essential nutrients.
The minerals silica and sulphur in particular benefits the nails, as does the B vitamin biotin. A deficiency in any one nutrient can impact negatively on hair and/or nail health. An under-active thyroid gland, or iron deficiency anaemia, can also have a negative impact on hair and/or nail health. If there are any problems with hair or nails such as hair that breaks easily or nails that split or brittle hair or nails then it is best to see a GP to rule out any underlying medical problem.
Iodine or biotin can sometimes be deficient with brittle hair or nails. One can supplement with iodine by using iodised salt or sea kelp. But do NOT use iodised salt or sea kelp or any other supplements containing iodine if one is undergoing treatment for the thyroid gland without first consulting one’s physician. Blackstrap molasses and brewer’s yeast are good natural sources of B vitamins, as are dairy products. Raw egg whites should be avoided as these contain a substance called avidin that binds to biotin.
Your Mum should try to eat a couple of eggs a day [rich in sulphur-containing amino acids] and and garlic, onions, broccoli, prawns and shrimps are also rich in sulphur. Bell peppers and cucumber are rich in silica.
Hope that helps.
