Problems losing weight… Please help?

Posted by admin Comments (5)

I’m slightly overweight, by like 20 pounds or so and i’ve been looking to lose between 30 and 40 pounds. I had some major health issues a few months ago and my doctor thought that my weight might have been a small reason for those problems…small but a reason nonetheless and i don’t want to have those problems again so i’ve been trying to take care of what i can to prevent it.

Most of my life, i was an avid pop drinker…pepsi so a ton of calories. After i got out of the hospital a few months ago and fully set my mind to losing weight, i cut pop off cold turkey thinking that that was where most of my daily calories were coming from because i don’t eat too unhealthy and i never eat much of anything anyway. So i got every bit of pop out of the house and that was it. Along with that…i turned my diet into mainly fruits and veggies, low-fat yogurts, greens, non-red meat and other types of proteins. I drink tons of water and freshly squeezed juices. All in a healthy moderation. I eat between 1100-1200 calories usually, sometimes a little over but never over 1300 just because, i get full very quickly and stop eating, resulting in my not eating much at any time. I also ride the exercise bike that i have for an hour a day, then go to the gym and do the treadmill for another hour and i end up lifting weights for 45 minutes to an hour plus i’m always up an running with my daily work so it’s not like i’m not getting more than enough exercise.

I keep a full diary of my diet and exercise and my fiance is all about being healthy, keeping only healthy foods in the house, exercising…i work with him and i never cheat on diets or skip exercising any day Monday-Friday.

And yet…i’ve lost MAYBE 5-6 pounds since the beginning of July of this year.

I’ve had my on and off fitness trainer and also a nutritionist look at my diet and my exercise and they say…by all that i’m doing, i should’ve lost the weight i want to lose and then some. And yet…hardly lost any at all and they’re stumped as to reasons. When i went into the hospital at the end of June, i did have calcium and vitamin D deficiencies but i’ve been taking those supplements religiously to get back on track since i’ve gotten out and they should be back up to normal again but i’ve been told those deficiencies could be a reason for having trouble losing weight.

Could anybody give me any other possible reasons for my having this much trouble trying to get this weight off?

If you are taking in around 1200 calories, then this is ideal for people to lose weight, even without exercise. With the exercise on top of this, you should be losing weight.

Are you on any antidepressants or other medication, as some medications including antidepressants can hinder weight loss and make it harder to lose weight.

I would recommend you also take a look at what you are doing fitness wise in the gym too. You mentioned how you do 45 minutes weight training. You will be developing muscle mass over time. Muscle weighs slightly more than fat. If you put on around half a pound of muscle per week, and lost slightly more weight but in the form of bodyfat the scales will show you staying the same weight, although your bodyfat will be coming down.

Try and get your Bodyfat tested at your local gym. Ensure you get it done before your workout, and not after, as dehydration following a workout can affect your results. This will really allow you to better understand your progress.

Also take a look at your cardiovascular training such as your running and biking. You will burn calories plodding away at the same pace, however your body gets used to the repettetive movement. If instead you alternative between high intensity cardio (30 seconds) then normal/medium intensity (90-120sec) this will be a far more effective fat burner workout. For example jogging for 2 minutes then sprinting for 30 seconds, and repeat for your whole workout.

    I hope this helps.

Has your trainer and/or nutritionist done a body fat analysis on you? It’s possible, with a significant shift in your diet and training that you ARE losing fat, but not losing weight… because you’re gaining muscle mass at the same time that you are losing body fat. A good thing… and eventually it will catch up. Five or six pounds is pretty good in four or five months… without going on a severe diet. Moderation isn’t a bad thing…

And, if you want to break through, perhaps a little cross training to engage different muscles and/or conditioned muscles in a different way. Ultimate frisbee. Tennis. Soccer. Skiing. Yoga. Pilates. Boxing. Really, anything that is a full body activity that helps you use your body in a different way.

    Good luck.

Are you hungry throughout the day? if so eat more. by the sounds of it you are healthy. diet and exercise. but if you are not getting enough calories to sustain that workout your body will go into a sort of survival mode and try and save very last calorie. Eat a little more and allow your body to exspend those calories.

ALSO, weight shouldn’t be the concern. it should be body fat percentage. healthy is 20-30% for females. of course you want to be on the lower end but don’t consentrate on weight. muscle weighs more than fat and muscle burns more calories. lift some weights and get that body burning. don’t worry about getting ripped or too buff. people who do that REALLY try and work hard to look that way.

    Keep up the good work!
