switching back to pedigree..?

Posted by admin Comments (8)

My dog used to be eating Pedigree Senior food (and if I couldn’t find that then I’d get the Lamb and Rice formula) ever since I got him(6yrs old then)He was doing great..his coat was glossy,he was energetic, the vet said he had a strong heart he had no vitamin deficiencies. Then I decided to try holistic food. Chocolate ended up getting an Allergic reaction to it. He started constantly biting himself and a he loss some leg fur. He is now on a medication which the vet said would help stop chocoalte from biting his behind so much. The vet also said I should switch him back to Peddigree since he was doing fine. Now that I think about it he was perfectly fine before. I know everyone on here says it’s junk but at least it beats Beneful,Goodlife,Purina, and Iams by a mile. I thinks it is one of the better brands youd find in a supermarket. Although not the best food ou will ever find,Chocolate is better off on that. Could you guys do me a favor and please not be harsh on me because of this?

I think feeding Pedigree is a good idea. It’s the best food you can buy at a retail store. I also mix in an egg and some carrots into the dry food, so my girls get some fresh food as well. I’ve been feeding Pedigree for years, but before that I was feeding Beneful and had problems with ticks. People will be critical of feeding Pedigree, but my vet says it’s a good food, and I’m more likely to listen to him than people here who can’t even be civil.

that’s absolutely fine to change back to pedigree if that is what works with your dog and i agree that its the best retail food that you can buy. I run my own business and my top seller is skinners Field ad trial which is full of the right amount of proteins and oils suited to your kind of dog all of my dogs are working dogs and they are on high protein food but low oils which gives them all the energy that they need.

I have tried every bag of “premium” dog food there was, ones with no corn, no wheat, real meats, etc.. my english bulldogs could not find anything that would agree with all of them (3 pups). They either had dull coats, runs, digestive problems, itching, terrible tear stains… Out of frustration I ended up trying to feed them Pedigree since that is what the three adults ate and never had no problems.. They have been on Pedigree for about 7 months (they are now 14 months old) and they do wonderful on it.. No more problems what so ever.. I think you should go ahead and switch back if that is what worked best before, and yes stay away from Beneful, goodlife, and the rest.. They have new Chicken and Vegetables with Pedigree.. your baby may just love that to death..
Also a really good food as far as great coats, good stools, no gas :) , is Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover… I would have them on it but having to buy for 6 dogs gets quite expensive..
    Good luck..

i think your dog has flea bite dermatitis and you aren’t even aware he has fleas….

rule of thumb.. make sure your dog food has no by products listed in the ingredients and go from there

Why are you bothering to tell us at all? If you never told us – we would never know what diet your dog is on. It’s almost as if you want someone to chastise you.

  8. humor4fms says:

Ok here goes, the only rule of thumb here that counts is
“First Do NO Harm” To me it seems like you were doing NO harm to begin with before you changed the diet!!

You had no clue what your dog was eating before you got this dog, and what it was eating as a puppy, so it may have been on pedigree puppy. To often this is what dogs get used to and this is what the digestive tract agrees with. Then wham, some human error walks in and things get changed around and that’s when things go wrong. Some dogs handle it well, others don’t.

Your dog is showing signs of NOT handling it well. This may very well be a sign of poor genetic links or it may not be. Whatever the problem may be, not one single person on here should condemn or speak out about what you feel is right for YOUR dog. What is right for YOUR dog is your choice, because YOU do have the best interest of the dog in mind.

If the dog was doing well on Pedigree, Then switch back slowly to avoid upsetting the balance in the digestive tract. Often times a dog can switch over to another brand of dog food that is better for them, it’s just finding what they are allergic to. Common allergies to food are the beef and chicken and that includes the by products too. Which is why most people switch to the organic brands which are more expensive and hard to find in local areas.

Not one person can judge on these boards for something you think is the right choice for your dog. But i do think you should (if you want to switch to a better brand) try Timber Wolf, which i think you will find has none of the garbage or by products and the BHA, or BHT’s in them.
